Whether you have chosen a strap crafted from our prestige tannery leathers or our high-performance FKM fluororubber, proper maintenance ensures the longevity of your investment. This official protocol outlines how to handle, store, and preserve your strap to maintain its structural integrity and aesthetic distinction.
At a Glance: Quick Care Rules
-
DO: Store leather straps flat in a well-ventilated, low-humidity space. If damp, blot gently with a microfiber cloth and air-dry naturally at room temperature.
-
DO NOT: Store leather straps long-term in plastic pouches, force-bend them backwards, or use direct heat sources like hairdryers.
-
WHITE POWDER? Natural wax bloom is standard on British Bridle leather. Gently buff the surface with a horsehair brush or soft cloth.
-
FKM RUBBER: After exposure to saltwater, chlorine, or sweat, rinse the strap and stainless steel hardware thoroughly under lukewarm tap water and wipe dry.
1. Initial Unboxing & The Transit Pouch
Your strap arrives inside a high-clarity protective PVC pouch, designed strictly to shield the leather surfaces and hand-finished edge paint from abrasive friction during international transit.
-
Short-Term Transit Only: This packaging is engineered exclusively for shipping logistics, not permanent storage.
-
Storage Hazard (Plasticizer Migration): Flexible PVC contains synthetic plasticizers. Prolonged containment in an airtight, non-breathable environment—especially under fluctuating temperatures—can trigger plasticizer migration. These chemical compounds react directly with water-based edge paint, causing the sealed edges to soften, liquefy, or become permanently tacky.
-
Protocol: Remove the strap from the PVC sleeve immediately upon arrival. Never store your leather straps inside sealed plastic containers or zip bags.
2. General Leather Preservation
Our hides are sourced from historic heritage tanneries (including J&E Sedgwick, Horween, Tanneries Haas, and Badalassi Carlo). These leathers are deeply nourished with organic tallows, natural waxes, and specialized currying agents.
-
The Break-In & Contour: Premium structural leathers possess a firm initial temper. Never force-bend the strap backward against its grain. The ambient warmth of your wrist will naturally contour the leather within the first few days of wear.
-
Efflorescence (Wax Bloom): A white, hazy, or powdery residue on the leather surface is a natural occurrence known as "bloom"—the defining characteristic of authentic wax-curried bridle leather. It is not mold. Simply buff the surface with a horsehair brush or lint-free microfiber cloth to melt the waxes back into the grain and reveal a lustrous shine.
-
Storage Environment: Always store leather straps laid flat or mounted on a dedicated watch pillow inside a dry, breathable, and well-ventilated space (such as a cedar-lined watch box or a cotton pouch). Keep completely isolated from direct sunlight and artificial UV sources to prevent premature drying and uneven fading.
-
Moisture Management & Zermatt Lining: Every BAZARNIK leather strap is backed with French Haas Zermatt calfskin, engineered specifically to resist wrist sweat and humidity. However, sweat resistance on the wrist-contact side does not make the strap submersible. The upper leather remains an organic, breathable material. Avoid hand-washing submersion, rain saturation, and swimming. If soaked, never apply a hairdryer or direct radiant heat, as rapid moisture loss will shrink leather fibers and permanently crack the edge paint. Blot moisture immediately with a dry cloth and air-dry at room temperature.
3. FKM Sailcloth-Embossed Strap Care
Engineered for uncompromising technical utility, our FKM variants combine the chemical inertness and non-tacky resilience of high-density fluorocarbon rubber with an embossed sailcloth profile.
-
All-Weather Resilience: FKM is completely impervious to saltwater, skin lipids (sebum), ultraviolet light, and ozone degradation. It will not warp, dry out, or crack under environmental exposure.
-
Storage Protocol: Unlike organic leather, FKM is chemically stable in humid and airtight conditions. To maintain the crisp geometric profile of the embossed sailcloth pattern, store the strap flat or on a watch pillow without heavy objects resting on top.
-
Cleansing Procedure: Built for marine exposure and intense physical activity. Following contact with seawater, chlorinated pools, or heavy perspiration, rinse both the strap body and the 316L stainless steel buckle thoroughly under lukewarm tap water. Dry completely with a clean lint-free towel.
